NEC V20/V30

The NEC V20 and V30 are a pin-compatible and object code-compatible alternatives to Intel's 8088 and 8086, respectively. However, they also include additional instruction set extensions that allow them to run code written for Intel's 8080 CPU. Additional improvements include support for instructions used by Intel's 80186 and 80188 CPUs. There are many variants with minor differences, so only those that contain the most differences will be listed below.

Variant: V20
The original V20 core.

Variant: V25
The V20 core, but in a microcontroller.

Variant: V30
A V20 core with a 16-bit external data bus, similar to the Intel 8086.

Variant: V33
A V30 with separate address and data buses, as well as hardware instruction decoding rather than microcode. Performance is equivalent to an Intel 80286, though Intel 8080 code can no longer be executed.

Variant: V35
The V30 core, but in a microcontroller.

Variants: V40, V50
Embedded versions of the V20 and V30, respectively, that integrate several peripherals that otherwise require additional chips.
